Why Atlas & Comet Are Unlikely To Win The AI Browser War

Both OpenAI and Perplexity have launched their own AI-enabled browsers, Atlas and Comet, in an effort to revolutionize internet use. However, this is not likely to be the next big innovation, as both companies frame their new browsers as the first step towards completely reshaping how consumers use the internet. While these phrases may have resonated well in focus groups, they are effectively meaningless compared to Chrome, Edge, and Safari, each browser is integrated into a comprehensive suite of digital products and tools centered around a different operating system. In their efforts to find sustainable monetization models, both companies may have fallen victim to survivorship bias, where we focus on the common traits of those that succeeded while ignoring the others that failed. This bias is often cited as an example of how successful tech companies can learn from WWII bombers.
