Val Kilmer, the actor who died in 2025 after being diagnosed with pneumonia, will appear in the new indie film As Deep as the Grave, though he never filmed scenes. His likeness and performance were recreated using state-of-the-art generative AI technology. Kilmer had been cast in the role of Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist Father Fintan but was unable to attend set due to illness. The film's writer and director Coerte Voorhees revealed that Kilmer's character was influenced by his Native American heritage and love of the Southwest. The team used younger images of Kilmer and footage from his final years to depict his character's stages of life. The use of AI technology was even featured in a scene in the 2022’s As Deep As the Grave scene.
