Researchers have identified a spider species in the Amazon rainforest that survives by playing dead and may also be infected by the fungus that turns insects into zombies. The species, named Taczanowskia waska, was first spotted by conservationist Alexander Bentley during a nighttime tour in Ecuador. Instead of spinning webs, this spider hunts by mimicking fungus growing on a dead body and striking at passing prey midair. The resemblance to the fungus could potentially serve as a means of luring prey and avoiding predators.
