The school had a qualified applicant pool of 1,000 students, with 39% Hispanic, 21% black, 20% Asian and 17% white. Critics argued that selective admissions to the school would benefit students prepared to do the academic work and expose how many K-8 public schools fail low-income black and Hispanic families. The move was seen as an example of a trend of public education prioritizing students of minority backgrounds.
