In Illinois, the Democratic Party primary for Senate may result in a victory for Republicans' preferred Senate candidates in the coming years. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and is now the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the state, is expected to retire in 2025. In May, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat, became the dominant fundraiser with over $21 million in his war chest by July. The money came from corporate PACs, interest groups, executives, and unions, but a few donations, totaling about $90,000, were from prominent allies of President Donald Trump. Recent polls suggest Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton has taken the lead in the final days of the campaign. Despite these challenges, the race remains largely undecided.
