Volkswagen is developing the ID.4 into an electric Tiguan SUV as part of its overhauled lineup, with the new ID.5 expected to debut later this year and will be officially named in 2027. This is part of Volkswagen's strategy to move away from numerical naming for its next-generation EV models. The ID.6 is expected to bring a new style with what Volkswagen’s design boss, Andreas Mindt, calls the “secret sauce” of the new Tiguan. The new vehicle is set to compete against competitors such as Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy Equinox EV, and Audi A6 e-tron.
