Windows 11 still runs on code from the 1990s, Microsoft admits

A senior Microsoft executive, Mark Russinovich, revealed that much of the underlying technology in Windows 11 is still legacy, from decades ago. The Win32 API, which Microsoft maintains maintains a programming reference support document, was introduced with Windows 95 and had already been implemented in Windows NT prior to that. This revelation was made in a video posted to social media by the Microsoft Dev Docs account. Despite Microsoft's efforts to reboot the Windows API surface, which was not expected to perform well, Russinovated believes that it remains a fundamental layer inside of Windows that many apps have built on.
