Khamenei's hardline son Mojtaba appointed Iran's new leader, Pope Leo warns of Middle East 'hatred and fear'

Pope Leo warned of a "travesty of hatred and fear" in Iran and the Middle East as the U.S.-Israeli conflict escalated into its 10th day. The Israeli military reported a wave of attacks in central Iran and also struck infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah militants in Beirut. Iran and its proxies also appeared to have launched attacks across the region. The G7 finance ministers are set to discuss a joint release of oil from emergency reserves from the International Energy Agency. A seventh American has died from wounds sustained during Iran's initial counter-attack a week ago. The new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was chosen by the Assembly of Experts, giving him final say in all matters of state in the Islamic Republic.
