V Vox senior editorial director at Vox, Alex Castellanos, is concerned about the increasing threat posed by AI, which costs Americans $16.6 billion a year. The Aspen Institute's Crosscurrent summit on AI and national security featured a panel discussing the use of AI-generated face overlays to pass remote job interviews at Western tech companies and simultaneously work multiple remote positions simultaneously, sending salaries and intelligence back to North Korea. The FBI reported that North Korean operatives are using this method to hold multiple full-time jobs under fake identities, enabled by tools that didn't exist two years ago. The report also revealed that AI-enabled attacks have surged 89 percent year-over-year, while the average time from initial breach to spread throughout a network dropped to just 29 minutes. Despite these advancements, only about one in five victims ever reports a scam, the real number is unknown.
