A new round of in-person talks between the United States and Iran could be held as early as this week, according to sources. This comes after unsuccessful peace talks in Pakistan failed to reach a peace agreement to end the war. The key sticking point in the talks is the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for a free flow of shipping, with Iran's nuclear capability also a key issue. The U.S. Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump have offered hope for further talks, despite a U.K. blockade barring ships from entering or exiting Iranian ports. The International Atomic Energy Agency estimates Iran has nearly 1,000 pounds of highly enriched uranium, enough for 11 nuclear weapons, and Tehran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and has no intention of seeking a nuclear weapon.
