The DR Congo Ebola outbreak has killed 1,707 people, making it one of the deadliest in the country's history. The outbreak, named as the Bundibugyo strain, has been concentrated in the east of the country, where weak roads, armed groups and mobile mining populations make containment slow and dangerous. Of 3,802 confirmed cases, 1,700 have proved fatal, with a case-fatality rate of nearly 45%. The World Health Organization is accelerating candidate vaccines towards trials as the outbreak continues to grow despite a larger international response. The largest treatment centre yet is opening in Bunia, the provincial capital of Ituri province, adding critical isolation capacity. The cost of the crisis is estimated at an estimated US$3.6 billion.
