A South Jersey town, Monroe, is moving to ban data centers, including those that generate artificial intelligence (AI), from being built on the site of a proposed warehouse project. The move comes after months of backlash from residents over potential data centers being used to meet demand for AI. The council introduced an ordinance to remove data centers as a permitted use at a 159-acre redevelopment site, which is expected to be voted on at the council’s next meeting on April 8. The ordinance would apply to all data centers including traditional facilities and newer AI data centers. The proposal comes after fears about data centers surfaced during a January planning board meeting about the redevelopment project.
