The controversy arose after Kimmel made a joke about the first lady during a segment on his show during a White House correspondents' dinner. Melania criticised Kimmel and urged the TV network ABC to take action against him, while the president called for Kimmel's dismissal. The controversy comes after a shooting at the White House where an armed man attempted to enter the hall where the president, including members of the president’s Republican Party, was seen as a reference to the shooting. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suggested that companies can find ways to change conduct on Kimmel or take action.
