China Plays the Long Game in AI While US Chases Superintelligence: Brookings

A report by the Brookings Institution suggests that the U.S. is focusing on the AI race towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), while Chinese companies are focusing on efficiency, global adoption, and embedding the technology into real-world systems. The report also noted that Chinese developers are advancing on several tracks simultaneously, including improving model efficiency, expanding global adoption through open-source models, and integrating AI into consumer and industrial products. Hamza Chaudhry, AI and National Security Lead at the Future of Life Institute, said the difference reflects two competing views of how technological advantage will develop. The study also highlighted China's rapid integration of AI into physical products such as vehicles, smartphones, wearables, and robotics. It raises security concerns as governments and militaries can access open models.
