The Columbus Blue Jackets missed the NHL playoffs by six points despite a 92-point season. The team had a history of late leads, leading the NHL with multi-goal leads blown in 11 games. They also lost all four games against the Pittsburgh Penguins after holding a lead in the third period, including three blown two-goal losses. Despite ranking fourth in the NHL for average time spent leading in games, the Jackets were unable to protect these leads. Blown leads in third periods were the biggest reason for their failure. The Jackets also gave away 23 extra points against nine of their peers in the Eastern Conference, which amounted to a combined 23 points for those teams.
