A massive star, named WOH G64, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, has undergone a transformation that may indicate its impending demise, changing its color and becoming hotter in just a few seconds. Astronomers have been monitoring the red supergiant star over the past decade, recording an increase in surface temperatures as it evolved to a yellow hypergiant. The transformation, which marks the most extreme changes ever witnessed for a star, may be indicative of its imminent demise. The discovery of WOHG64, which is 28 times the mass of the Sun and has been observed for nearly 5 million years, provides a rare opportunity to observe the late stages of a star's life. The team of astronomers suggest two possible scenarios to explain the unusual behavior, including that the star may be bound to a binary system, which may have ejected its outer layers, leading to its transformation.
