Emma Boccanfuso's documentary, "Saudades Eternas," premiered in the international competition at Visions du Réel. The film is the feature debut of visual artist and director, focusing on life and death in Rio de Janeiro’s Chapéu Mangueira favela. It was originally conceived as an installation piece during her studies at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, but grew organically into a feature. The protagonist, Sueli, a matriarch who presides over a busy household, is seen as a refuge and witness to cycles of life and loss beyond its walls. The movie does not attempt to map each death into a clear narrative, but instead represents a portrait of resilience.
