Idaho law enforcement continue vocal opposition as ICE legislation heads to State Senate

The Idaho Senate has passed Senate Bill 1441, which would require each law enforcement agency in the state to participate in section 287(g) programs with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (ICE), leading to local law enforcement searching for illegal immigrants in the community and taking action against them. The Idaho Sheriff’s Association, Chief of Police Association, and the Fraternal Order of Police have consistently opposed the proposed legislation. Idaho Senate President Pro Tempore Kelly Anthon, R-Rupert, stated that the bill aims to ensure cooperation with ICE is governed by agreements set forth by the federal government. However, the Idaho Fraternal Association of Police President, Bryan Lovell, expressed concerns that this could endanger police officers, troopers, and deputies. The revised bill states that participation in these programs should be required only to the extent of the necessary resources for participation.
