Cleveland Teachers Union elects new president

The Cleveland Teachers Union has elected Errol Savage, a longtime school librarian, to its president. Savage defeated incumbent CTU president Shari Obrenski 1,610 to 1,438. This comes as the district prepares to implement a sweeping school consolidation plan. The district's plan to close and consolidate dozens of schools has been met with criticism from many educators. Savage's campaign emphasized increased transparency and engagement with rank-and-file members and the community. His first three priorities are addressing school mergers, enforcement of the union's collective bargaining agreement, and modernizing the CTU's constitution.
