A fake St. Paul bluegrass band, the Gillyweeds, died in a fake airplane crash on Monday morning. Local music fan Kyle Matteson, who goes by @solace on social media, discovered the news on his Facebook feed. He then began researching the band and their website, discovering that Todd Pitman, the producer of the Gillsweeds songs, was also the songwriter and musician. Pitman runs another web design business, Noisome Misdeeds, which lists clients like Trampled by Turtles, the Jayhawks, and Hippo Campus. The Gillsweed's Facebook page, which claimed to have nearly 60,000 followers, was changed to a fan page after Matteson found out about the fake deaths. The band's now-deleted page also had a note in the 'about section' of its audio and music site, Bandcamp, which reads "music and audio generated" by AI.
