James Lewis, a 13-year-old London-area boy, was diagnosed with a massive inoperable spinal tumor in March 2021. The benign tumor, which is about 7 inches in length and is "entwined" with his spinal cord, was so aggressive that it caused him to lose feeling and function in his lower body. Despite multiple surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy, the boy has lost function of his legs, bowel and bladder and is in rehabilitation. His condition also led him to give up his dream of becoming a professional boxer. A GoFundMe was established for James and his family by someone connected with the fishing community to raise funds for an electric wheelchair.
