A new monitoring system named “Jerk” has been developed by geophysicists François Beauducel and Philippe Jousset, who have been developing this system for over a decade. Jerk is a single broadband seismometer capable of automatically identifying very early signals of volcanic eruptions in real time. It was installed at the Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion Island, France, in 2014 and can be implemented using only one station. The system successfully predicted 92% of the volcano’s eruptions during its 10-year survey period, sending alerts between minutes and eight hours in advance.
