The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, a regional food bank in the Bay Area, has been faced with increasing food insecurity in Contra Costa County, California, due to higher food costs and a rise in unemployment since 2022. The nonprofit food bank relies heavily on donations or grants from the government, purchasing bulk foods and shipping them to distribution centers. Volunteers distribute food and supplies to those in need through distribution programs throughout the counties. The food bank has lost $1.9 million to $2 million in federal funding, which used to go to food. The October 2025 federal government shutdown disrupted CalFresh/SNAP benefits, leaving 98,000 local households without money they depend on to buy groceries. The Food Bank has created programs beyond food supplies, such as diaper distribution and food lockers in case someone misses someone.
