Mexico has identified over 40,000 people listed as missing persons through cross-referencing official databases like tax records and marriage registries. The number of missing individuals is a result of decades of drug violence and a poorly managed database, which officials believe is due to years of failure by prosecutors and law enforcement. So far, authorities have located and confirmed the identities of 5,338 people, allowing their cases to be reclassified as 'found'. The public policy group Mexico Evalua found a 200% increase in disappearances over the last decade, largely due to the increasing power of organized crime groups.
