The skeleton of a 200-ton blue whale that washed up on a southern Oregon beach in 2002 will soon return to the state of Oregon, where it is being reassembled for public display. The whale's high levels of the biotoxin domoic acid, which may not have been fatal but could have affected the whale's ability to feed and travel, led to extensive bruising and post-mortality scavenging from orcas. Experts from the United States, Japan, Iceland, Australia and Belgium were consulted to help clean up the whale’s oil-infused bones and resemble the skeleton. The project was led by Frank Hadfield, founder, president and CEO of Dinosaur Valley Studios, who believes that scientists may know more about the internal anatomies of dinosaurs than they do about blue whales.
