Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) and Brandon Herrera are set to go into a runoff election for the Republican nomination for Texas' 23rd District. Gonzales, a three-term lawmaker, has been accused of having an affair with his former staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, who died by suicide last year. Neither candidate met the majority threshold needed to win outright, leading Gonzales and Herrera to face in a May 26 runoff. The allegations have been heavily supported by top Republicans, including President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who have not yet withdrawn their endorsements of Gonzales.
