The Virginia legislature should approve a bill creating a voluntary grant fund to fund projects that reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. The fund, introduced by Del. Shelly Simonds, would be used to receive voluntary contributions for wildlife corridor and wildlife crossing projects. Money could be distributed to state agencies, local governments, transportation authorities, Native American tribes, academic institutions, and metropolitan planning organizations. Insurance data shows that over 60,000 collisions annually in Virginia between deer and vehicles cost the state and the commonwealth $533 million each year. The bill would ensure that money deposited into the fund wouldn't expire at the end of a fiscal year.
