The number of departures from the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) has increased from the previous reported to include at least 10 former Ai2 staffers and researchers, including the core of the institute’s flagship OLMo open-source model effort. These new hires have bolstered Microsoft's Superintelligence team, which is developing advanced AI systems in areas such as health care, energy, and AI companions. The move brings Microsoft a team with deep expertise in efficient, fully open model development. The changing nature of Ai2's funding environment and its focus on AI research for the common good have also contributed to these departures. The Institute's primary backer is now the Fund for Science and Technology, a $3.1 billion foundation created under Allen's instructions.
