Amazon is planning to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to Markham and Matteson, Chicago, by summer. The drones will operate out of hubs based in Matteson and Markham’s Amazon fulfillment centers and deliver packages to an up to 8-mile radius from these hubs. Each hub will initially start with 15 drones. The service will be a faster option with extra cost for people within the 8 mile radius. However, there are limitations: The drones can only deliver packages up to 5 pounds and cannot operate in mild inclement weather if weather conditions are too severe. If a drone's battery ever falls below 30%, it will conduct a "safe contingent landing" rather than returning to the hub. The drone program is expected to add about 100 more jobs to the two centers.
