Why foreign automakers dominate the sedan market

The biggest American automakers, including Kia, Toyota, and Volkswagen, have been focusing on the pickup truck and SUV markets in recent years, but still hold a significant market for cars in the sedan market. Despite these shifts, the average price for a vehicle being around $50,000, a compact sedan that starts at about $22,000 is considered an attractive entry point for buyers. Kia's K4 compact sedan and predecessor, the Kia Forte, were the brand's second-bestselling vehicle last year, accounting for 140,514 units sold. However, concerns over high vehicle prices and rising fuel costs have led some American automakers to reconsider their lineups. Volkswagen has kept its Jetta sedan in its lineup for 45 years in the U.S. as an affordable entry point. Industry experts believe sedans offer an alternative to SUVs and are typically more fuel efficient than utility vehicles.
