Data centers are becoming a focus of public discontent over their power in society, with many states considering legislation banning or stopping new data centers. However, the idea of putting data centers closer to consumers is gaining traction. Major players in housing, including homebuilder PulteGroup, are testing with Nvidia and California-based startup Span to install small fractional data center "nodes" on the exterior walls of newly built homes. The home-based grid allows for less construction needed on new ones and greater energy efficiency. The model could also be applied to use latent home power for crypto mining or to sell excess rooftop solar power or EV credits, but it is uncertain whether this model can scale. However there are challenges in the future due to limitations on power density, redundancy, physical security, and environmental controls.
