Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress who played the titular character on the original show, has announced that the Hulu revival series, New Sunnydale, will not be going ahead. The pilot was directed by Oscar-winning Nomadland director Chloé Zhao, who convinced Gellar that it was time to bring the show back. Gellar had previously been in talks to revive the series in a Hulu project in 2025, with Zhao set as director and executive producer, and Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerm serving as writers. The original Buffy ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and inspired the spinoff Angel.
