The move is part of a broader effort to shore up domestic control during the Ukraine conflict, which could strain popular support. The Kremlin has stated that these measures are in response to foreign companies' refusal to comply with Russian legislation and security measures against Ukrainian drones. The crackdown has also been criticised by diplomats and local media. Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged the Federal Security Board (FSB) to step up the fight against terrorism and strengthen the information and digital space. The internet crackdown has gone further than any previous time in Russia.
