In Los Angeles, a jury found Meta and Google liable in a landmark social media addiction case, another jury imposed significant penalties after finding that Meta failed to protect children from sexual exploitation, grooming and predatory behavior on its platforms. A separate court ruling stated that insurers are not required to shield these companies from liability related to harms associated with their products. These rulings have been seen as signals that the legal system is beginning to catch up. The SHIELD Pledge, a pledge that organizations refuse funding from social media and AI companies, aims to act independently without taking money from these companies.
