Richard French, a repeat sex offender, was sentenced to four to eight years in prison for raping his ex-girlfriend, Kearra Patten, and an additional one to two years for sexually assaulting a second woman. Patten argued that the sentences were insufficient considering the prior jury trial, which found him guilty of the first set of rape charges even though he had denied the crimes. She accused the prosecution, the defense attorney, and the court system of ignoring victims' rights and giving them a "slit on the wrist". Patten also expressed her right to put “every disgusting detail” before a jury, including threats to kill her if she reported the rape. The judge rejected the plea and directed the prosecution to bring the case back to court.
