Facebook parent company, Meta, is cutting hundreds of employees in Silicon Valley as it invests in artificial intelligence and considers cutting over 20% of its workforce in the San Francisco Bay Area. The layoffs will affect 124 employees in Burlingame, Calif. and 74 in Sunnyvale, with all affected positions permanently eliminated. The move signals a significant shift away from labor-intensive operations and towards machine-driven systems, according to experts. The company is also considering further cuts, which senior employees have been warned to prepare for. This is part of a larger trend of job cuts across the tech sector as companies increasingly invest in artificial Intelligence. Industry insiders estimate that more than 152,000 tech workers will be laid off in 2024 and at least 118,000 more in 2025.
