Archaeologists from the Complutense University of Madrid have discovered a scarab amulet in a tomb in the Necropolis of El Toro in Spain. The researchers believe the scarab was manufactured in the 5th or 6th century B.C.E., during the reign of one of the several pharaohs named Psamtek. It is not clear how the amulet got there, but an ancient trade route may have played a role. The scarab, which was found in the tomb, was made of faience and inscribed with hieroglyphs and Demotic characters. The archaeologists believe it may have been used as a living talisman by Egyptians, who saw it as symbols for the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
