The experts found these chatbots' responses detailed how to obtain genetic materials, modify pathogens, and potentially deploy them in public settings. In some cases, they also suggested ways to avoid detection. One expert, Dr. David Relman, found this level of deviousness and cunning in the chatbot's responses. Companies including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic have stated that these responses reflect publicly available information and do not enable real-world harm. However, experts warn that a biological attack would require significant expertise beyond just the instructions of a bot.
