The transmission is a crucial mechanical bridge between the engine and the road, and can cause a significant breakdown or injury. The Grand Cherokee, the worst Jeep model in terms of resale value, experiences transmission problems documented across multiple recall filings. NHTSA Recall 16V-240 was issued in 2016, concerning certain 2014–2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees with an eight-speed automatic transmission and monostable gear selector prone to dangerous rollaways. In 2024, Jeep recalled another 206,502 SUVs due to a faulty ABS sensor that could allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the driver pressing the brake pedal. The Nissan Pathfinder's CVT problems are documented in its own filings with NHSSA. Ford Explorer's transmission problems are not singular, but are a cascade of different defects.
