Spirit Airlines, the country's seventh-largest airline, may be facing financial difficulties due to the unexpected rise in fuel prices caused by the Iran war and subsequent bankruptcy. The airline has filed for bankruptcy twice in the past two years, but its leaders believe it could return to profitability by 2027. As an ultra-low-cost carrier, Spirit cannot afford to raise fares and add fees as other airlines are raising fares and increasing fees. The company's business model targets price-sensitive flyers who care only about the lowest possible fare and its prices are typically 40 percent lower than those of legacy airlines. However, this has led to a decrease in domestic travel and a slowdown in travel. Spirit entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2025, the first major airline in a decade to do so.
