Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has changed her stance on hydraulic fracturing (fracking), arguing that new technologies make the extraction method less environmentally harmful. This shift from her previous stance of opposition to the technique, which state company Pemex has reportedly used for decades. Sheinba also stated that fracking could help increase domestic gas output and reduce Mexico's heavy reliance on U.S. imports. A technical committee will investigate new potential fracking methods, such as non-potable water and reducing chemical additives. The government has also announced a strategy to strengthen energy sovereignty, which involves tapping natural gas reserves from both conventional and unconventional deposits.
