Paris mayoral race tests support for green transformation

Paris's Mayor Anne Hidalgo has transformed Paris into a green city, transforming it into a "15-minute-city" of bike lanes with more trees and more trees, a city that nearly half of Parisians now ride a bicycle every day. The Paris en Selle cyclists' group has welcomed the construction of about 1,000 km (620 miles) of cycle lanes over the last decade, which they believe means nearly half Parisians ride a bike at least once a week. However, there have been criticism over cleanliness and the growing municipal debt of around 10 billion euros ($11 billion), up 42% since 2020. The election, which will decide on the winner between Socialist Emmanuel Grégoire and conservative former minister Rachida Dati, is expected to be between 33% and 30%.
