The Hudson Square Business Improvement District is urging the Department of Transportation (DOT) to redesign West Houston St. in order to make the busy east-west corridor safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The district has identified key solutions to alleviate congestion, narrow sidewalks, no dedicated bike lane, and a roadway that does not prioritise its biggest volume of users. The plan includes widening sidewalks, adding greenery and seating, improving lighting, and creating a protected bikeway that would connect the East River to the Hudson River. Karasyk, president and CEO of the Hudson Square business Improvement District, argues that strategic streetscape upgrades can benefit the area beyond the roadway. The Mamdani administration is moving ahead on ambitious projects and advancing pedestrian-friendly measures.
