A high-stakes Texas primary exposed the party's fault lines, with state Representative James Talarico, a Democrat from Texas and US Senate candidate, facing a task to build trust with Black voters, win back moderate Latino voters, and gain inroads with conservative white voters. This division presents challenges for Democrats nationally as they prepare for primary season, which also reflects a shift from college-educated white voters to more working-class Black voters. Both candidates' bases of support bore out on Election Day, with TalarICO gaining double-digit support from white Democrats and Crockett winning the Black vote by 72 points. Complacing this was voter suppression due to changes to voting procedures in the state's elections, particularly in the Dallas area. Despite the shift of Latino voters to Democratic politics, there is still a dominant belief among national Democrats that if you're not white, you're expected to vote as a bloc, according to longtime Latino vote strategist Mike Madrid.
