California congresswoman Laura Friedman has introduced a bill to help police respond to high-speed chases with new technology. The Next Gen Road Safety Act would expand the COPS grant program to allow law enforcement agencies to access federal funds to purchase modern tools and technology to prevent and de-escalate such pursuits. These tools include vehicle-disabling systems, police bumper systems, and drones to track pursuit drivers. The bill was introduced as a response to two separate police chases ending with suspects dead across SoCal.
