The Supreme Court has blocked California from enforcing a policy that restricts schools from informing parents if their child expresses gender nonconformity or attempts to change their name or pronouns. The ruling, which was split 6-3 on ideological grounds, centered on children's expressions of gender in schools. The court reinstated a lower court ruling allowing schools to inform parents about their child's gender expression. The case challenged a 2024 law that prevents public school employees from disclosing information about a student's sexual orientation, gender identity or expression without the student's consent. However, a group of parents sued claiming that California’s law violates the Constitution and that the policy also violates the free speech rights of teachers.
