Today in Chicago History: City Council bans horse-drawn carriages

The Chicago City Council voted to ban horse-drawn carriages in 2020, following years of concerns about traffic congestion, multiple citations and animal welfare concerns. The debut of the Chicago White Stockings and the first American League game in 1901 was also the White Sox's first victory. In 1809, Ninian Edwards of Kentucky was appointed the first Illinois Territory governor by President James Madison. Michael Jordan scored 35 points in his first playoff victory with the Chicago Bulls, but the Bulls were defeated 3 games to 1. The Chicago Bears unveiled plans for a new stadium project on the lakefront partly funded by the public in 1924.
