Evanston City Council has delayed a property tax relief proposal after divided discussion. The proposed circuit breaker program aims to lessen the burden of property taxes for long-time homeowners. The proposal involves using $500,000 from the Affordable Housing Fund to provide a “direct credit” to eligible homeowners on their property taxes, equal to 20% of the total bill. However, not all eligible households will qualify. The program would sunset one year after it's enacted, unless the City Council decides to extend or renew it with additional funding.
