Australia’s Government Supports Further Investigation Into ‘Radio Caps’

The Australian government is supporting a cost-benefit analysis into the controversial 'radio caps' which regulate licence fees for the use of sound recordings. The current cap, which was legislated over 55 years ago, prevents the recording industry from negotiating a new rate on these sound recording royalties paid by commercial radio. Currently, commercial radio stations pay just 0.4% of broadcast revenue in Australia, compared to countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Six independent reviews have recommended their removal.
