New Mexico's Class 5A boys state basketball tournament will begin on Friday with 40 first-round games. Volcano Vista and Cleveland are the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the Class 5 A boys state tournament, respectively. The 16-team fields across 10 brackets were unveiled by the New Mexico Activities Association. The Journal highlights that Volcano Vista's coach Greg Brown has done a better job of coaching his team this season than any other team. Cleveland's loss to No. 2 leaves Cleveland's road more challenging, with Sandia potentially a wild card. Meanwhile, Highland is the 1 seed in 4A and opens against district rival Grants. The defending state champion, Artesia, is seeded second and could potentially reach the finals.
